Some decks stand the test of time, and this 30-year-old beauty had been fairly well maintained—until the last 15 years. When we arrived, it was clear that years of neglect, thick algae buildup, and rotting boards had taken a toll. But with the right process and attention to detail, we knew this deck still had life left in it. We started with a deep clean and structural repairs, removing every rotted board and lifting the heavy algae to restore the wood’s integrity. Once the deck had fully dried, it was time for stain—but with a deck this large, and in the middle of a heat wave, we had to be extra strategic. Staining in high heat can lead to flash drying, where the stain dries too quickly on the surface before properly penetrating the wood. This can lead to uneven color and a shorter lifespan for the finish. To avoid this, we carefully timed our work, staining only during the cooler morning and evening hours—even if that meant taking a few extra days to get it done right. The result? A beautifully restored deck, aged to perfection, and protected for years to come. The extra effort was absolutely worth it.
